Let me teach you what doctors won't!
The oldest living dog was 31.5 years old when he passed, and his name was Bobi!!. He lived in Portugal with his family and only ate the food that they ate. Is that amazing?!?! When I learned about Bobi I was truly inspired, I want all of my pets to live that long! I had 2 cats who lived to almost 20, and I was really happy about that. Unfortunately, I had 4 others who did not live that long, and I wish I knew what to do to improve their health so they could have lived longer lives. I would love for all of my pets to have long lives and be happy and healthy until the day they leave me. I am sure we ALL want that for our pets, and there are things we can do daily to help that become a reality, including diet, exercise, and other natural solutions. Many people have pets who are suffering, which leads to suffering for the pet parents themselves. How do we get out of negative health cycles? We all want our furry family members to live longer and healthier!! My goal is to help pet parents make changes that will help them feel more confident and reassured that they can take care of their pets and provide them longer, healthier lives.
So, how did I get to this place of wanting all pets to live as long as Bobi? I was always interested in wellness and making people “feel better” from the time I was a child, especially when my mother was not well. I decided at an early age to become a pharmacist so I could help my mother. I worked hard in high school and college to learn about medicine and how our bodies work so I could become a pharmacist and start on my path to helping people heal.
After practicing pharmacy for many years, I had two “a-ha” moments in my life. The first was that I was created to do something with animals. I didn’t quite know what that looked like, but I felt a tugging in my heart like I was missing my purpose in life. Major, my childhood dog, was my best friend and his passing was one of the hardest days of my life. All the pets I have had in my adult life have been true furry children to me and I have wanted to take precious care of each and every one of them.
My second “a-ha” moment was the realization that the sickest people I knew were on a lot of medications. I have always wondered if people are on a lot of medicines because they are really sick or are people really sick because they are on a lot of medicines? (And if you’d like to hear stories, let me know.) To me, it is the riddle of “which came first, the chicken or the egg?”. As we know, medications have a lot of side effects and drug interactions. Might this be playing into our current health issues?
In 2014, I learned about essential oils and the fact that they have therapeutic properties, just like medicines. I thought this was fascinating since we did not learn this in pharmacy school. Essential oils, herbs and botanicals were not even mentioned. I started doing more research and learned a lot about essential oils and how I could incorporate them into my family’s life to improve our wellness without side effects. It was a game changer. I received my certification in clinical aromatherapy as well as animal aromatherapy and realized that natural health was the way I wanted my family to maintain wellness. This was a paradigm shift for my family and for my pets.
This has made a huge difference in how I now take care of my furry children. My “heart” dog has had many health issues over the years, and I have learned new ways to support him through diet, supplements, and essential oils. I am confident that what I am doing for him is improving his health and lifespan. He might not live until he is 30, like Bobi did, but I am confident that he will live longer than if I was still feeding him and treating him the way I was 10 years ago. Of course, I now wonder what changes I could have made in the lives of past pets to make them healthier and live longer. I may never know that, but I know I can do better now with the knowledge and training that I have.
Today, my goal is to help people extend the average life of their beloved pets and decrease sickness overall in animals. If I can do that, I feel that my true purpose has been fulfilled.
